Chettinadu Sweets making

Traditional Handcrafting from Karaikudi

Chettinad cuisine — born in the region of Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu — is world-renowned for its complex flavors and meticulous preparations. At Karai Bites, we are proud keepers of these culinary secrets, passed down through generations of traditional Chettinad households.

Every single item in our kitchen is handmade in small batches. We hand-knead the rice flour dough, hand-roll the spiral Suthu Murukku, and deep-fry them at accurate temperatures in traditional iron vessels. Our Athirasam is made by combining hand-pounded raw rice flour with native melted jaggery — a method unchanged for over a century.

We source our ingredients directly from local farms in Karaikudi and the surrounding Sivaganga district. The rice is freshly ground in neighborhood flour mills (மாவு ஆலை), and the jaggery is pure, unadulterated sugarcane syrup from regional sugar houses. Every batch of snacks — Murukku, Seedai, Mixture, Kaarasevu, Ribbon Pakoda — is prepared with freshly squeezed coconut milk, never powdered or canned.
